Terdapat dua jenis Rangkaian Kawasan Setempat (LAN) iaitu:

1. Pengguna dan pelayan (Client-server)

Jenis LAN ini terdiri daripada sebuah komputer pelayan (Server) untuk melayan komputer lain yang bertindak sebagai pengguna (Client). Komputer pelayan akan menjalankan pengurusan pusat(Centralized) untuk melayan pengguna-pengguna dari segi perkongsian perisian aplikasi, data, pencetak dll. Pelayan biasanya berkuasa tinggi.
