Terdapat dua jenis Rangkaian Kawasan Setempat (LAN) iaitu:

1. Pengguna dan pelayan (Client-server)

Jenis LAN ini terdiri daripada sebuah komputer pelayan (Server) untuk melayan komputer lain yang bertindak sebagai pengguna (Client). Komputer pelayan akan menjalankan pengurusan pusat(Centralized) untuk melayan pengguna-pengguna dari segi perkongsian perisian aplikasi, data, pencetak dll. Pelayan biasanya berkuasa tinggi. Sesuatu protokol itu adalah satu set peraturan yang mentadbir talian komunikasi di antara beberapa buah komputer yang terdapat pada suatu rangkaian. Peraturan-peraturan tersebut termasuklah garis panduan yang merangkumi beberapa kriteria-kriteria sebuah rangkaian. Ini termasuklah cara mengakses, topologi fizikal yang dibenarkan, jenis-jenis perkabelan, dan kelajuan penghantaran data.
